The historic market hall (Hala Targowa) in Gdańsk, built at the end of the 19th century, is undergoing a major revitalisation led by Apsys, a company known for transforming historic urban spaces into vibrant, multifunctional destinations. The €32 million (PLN 141 million) investment aims to turn the hall into a dynamic culinary and cultural hub, seamlessly blending modern functions with respect for its historical fabric.
Apsys began revitalisation work in January 2025, starting with sandblasting and drilling for geothermal heat pumps. The next phase involves complex structural work, including new floor slabs and the expansion of the first floor. These steps are critical for introducing modern food services and cultural activities while preserving the heritage character. “Each project like this requires a tailored approach, combining historical sensitivity with modern sustainable technologies. Our experience from similar projects in Łódź, Wrocław, and France has been essential,” said Cyryl Plumecoq, Operation Department Director at Apsys Polska.
The redeveloped hall will feature an open, multi-level culinary concept, with four full-service restaurants on the top floor and diverse food stalls on the ground floor serving cuisines from around the world. The basement will retain a traditional market area for fresh produce, updated to meet contemporary standards. “Our vision is already attracting strong tenant interest — over 80% of space was leased at the time of purchase, confirming the market’s enthusiasm,” said Katarzyna Kopszak-Dziurnikowska, Head of Development Department at Apsys Polska.
The architectural concept, designed by Boris Kudlička with Partners, highlights the combination of art and functionality to create an inviting atmosphere. The project also includes ecological solutions such as geothermal heating and green infrastructure, integrating sustainability into a historic setting. Apsys is working closely with conservation authorities and local partners, including FineTech Construction and Dantiscum Archaeological Laboratory, to ensure historical and environmental considerations are respected.
