Danubius Hotels Zrt. has spent HUF 50 billion (€125 million) from its own funds on refurbishing its hotels over the past five years, with renovations continuing. The British-owned company employs more than 2,000 people in Hungary and operates 16 hotels with 4,046 rooms.
The hotel chain has completed renovations on 70% of its properties, making them ready for the 2026 summer season. More than a third of common areas have been fitted with a modern look. The company has been particularly active over the past six months, with parallel development projects worth nearly HUF 10 billion (€25 million) underway at multiple locations.
Over five years, nearly 1,000 hotel rooms and suites were renovated, along with lobbies, restaurants, conference facilities, and wellness areas. "The investments were carried out entirely from our own sources and market-based financing, without state subsidies. Our goal is to build a modern portfolio that preserves the character of the hotels and remains competitive in the long term," said Balázs Kovács, CEO of Danubius Hotels Zrt.
Construction and renovation typically took place during winter periods, ensuring guests could enjoy uninterrupted services during peak season. The developments aim to enhance aesthetics, improve technical infrastructure, and increase energy efficiency in often historic buildings.
Recent projects include the refurbishment of Hotel Erzsébet in Budapest city centre, completed in five months while fully closed. In Bükfürdő, the all-inclusive restaurant modernisation has been completed. In Hévíz, the Ensana Thermal Aqua underwent room and wellness area modernisation, while Hotel Annabella in Balatonfüred now welcomes guests with renovated rooms and lobby. The ground floor of Danubius Hotel Arena in Budapest has been refurbished, with a new restaurant opening at the Hungaria.
