Construction of a battery plant has begun in Šurany, Slovakia, with the strategic aim of supporting the development of electromobility, closely tied to the automotive industry. The project is also facing opposition from part of the public, reports yimba.sk.
Construction of a battery cell production plant officially began in the Šurany Industrial Park industrial zone on Tuesday. The strategic investor is the Slovak-Chinese investor Gotion InoBat Batteries (GIB), which is investing a total of €1.2 billion.
The battery cell production plant will grow on a site with an area of 94 hectares and will create 1,300 new jobs. Pilot production is planned for September 2026, with full production expected to start in 2027.
The start of construction was associated with protests from part of the public, and according to the media, heavy-duty workers had to intervene. Parts of the local population are reportedly concerned about possible environmental risks, the influx of foreign workers, or the takeover of arable land.
