After four years, the reconstruction of the former Prague InterContinental hotel is reaching its completion. The hotel is to be operated by the international Fairmont hotel chain under the name Fairmont Golden Prague, reports E15.cz

The building use approval is expected at the turn of January and February. The hotel will open to the first guests at the beginning of Spring. The reconstruction cost the R2G investment group roughly CZK 4 billion (€159 million). It bought it in 2018 for almost another CZK 6 billion (€239 million). This is the most expensive hotel investment in Prague in history.

The opening of the Fairmont Golden Prague Hotel will also bring new opportunities for luxury shops. The luxury Latvian goldsmith Grenardi, the Italian jewellery group Damiani, and the Pasquale Bruni jewellery store will sell their goods in the hotel's retail spaces.

Two years ago, the CEO, the Austrian Gerhard Struger, was selected. He has thirty years of experience in luxury hotels in Europe and Asia. Before coming to Prague, he served as regional vice president of the Sofitel and SO/ brands in Central Europe and worked as the general manager of the Sofitel hotel in Munich.

The hotel was built between 1968 and 1974. The project was created based on an agreement between the Czechoslovak government and PanAm, which owned the InterContinental hotel chain. It was supposed to accommodate guests of the PanAm airline in about 400 rooms. After 1968, as part of normalisation, the Čedok hotel became its owner and operator, and American companies were forced out of the project.
