Ikea plans to open a new furniture store in central Vienna, next to the Westbahnhof railway station with no parking place for cars. The construction works started in January 2020 and will be finished by next year.

The new concept of Ikea at Westbahnhof makes Vienna a pioneer worldwide as it will be the global chain’s first store with no space for cars. The project focuses on current trends and takes into account changed customer behaviour as well as the new trends of mobility.

According to Ikea, people living in inner-city areas don't use a car. The location of the new store is directly connected to public transport as it’s situated right next to the Westbahnhof railway station. All products that are too big to carry will be delivered home within 24 hours from a new logistics centre in Strebersdorf, Vienna.

The construction works of the seven-storey, innovative urban furniture store started on the 7th of January and will be finished by 2021. The new store aims to also become a meeting point for the district, with restaurants and a generally accessible, green roof terrace with around 160 trees that should ensure a good microclimate for visitors.
